USA: Iran and US Decision-Making Options Have Been Clarified in Vienna Talks

The US representative at the UN says that in the latest round of Vienna talks, the decision-making options for Iran and the United States have been clarified. Iran’s representative, however, says the US must guarantee that future governments of that country will not withdraw from this agreement.
Following a semi-annual report by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, regarding the implementation of Resolution 2015 concerning the JCPOA agreement between Iran and six world powers, the Security Council held consultations on Wednesday, June 30.
Jeffrey DeLaurentis, Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations, said in this regard: “In the latest round of Vienna talks, it became clear what decisions Iran and the United States need to make in order to jointly return to the agreement.”
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in his remarks called on the US to lift sanctions against Iran and asked Iran to fully return to the JCPOA provisions.
Majid Takht-Ravanchi, ambassador of the Islamic Republic to the United Nations, in his remarks at the Security Council meeting said: “Those who have broken their commitments must make difficult decisions.” He called for the US to guarantee that future governments will not reverse the decisions of the current government and will not withdraw from the nuclear agreement.
China’s ambassador also called on the United States to guarantee that it will not withdraw from the JCPOA in the future.
According to experts, Joe Biden, the President of the United States, lacks legal authority in this regard and cannot make decisions for future US presidents. On the other hand, the process of major decision-making in the United States is different from countries like Iran and China.
Currently, the Islamic Republic is enriching uranium at 60 percent concentration; whereas according to the JCPOA, it is only permitted to enrich uranium up to 3.67 percent. To build an atomic bomb, 90 percent enriched uranium is needed.
The Islamic Republic says it is not seeking to build nuclear weapons and will quickly return to the 2015 agreement if the US lifts its sanctions.
The UN Secretary-General said: “I still believe that a complete revival of the JCPOA is the best way to ensure that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful.”
