Vatican Expels Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò

The Vatican has expelled Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who had previously described Pope Francis as a servant of Satan.
Carlo Maria served as Vatican’s ambassador to the United States from 2011 to 2016, but was suspended in 2018 following his claims that Pope Francis had knowledge of the sexual misconduct by American Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and took no action regarding it.
He had also previously described Pope Francis as a false prophet and a servant of Satan, calling for his resignation. Following his criticism of the Catholic Church’s modernization efforts and his promotion of coronavirus conspiracy theories, Carlo Maria had built a following. However, after being declared a schismatic for causing division within the Church, he was excommunicated by the Vatican.
The Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a statement on Friday regarding the excommunication or expulsion of the 83-year-old Carlo Maria Viganò. The statement noted that his previous positions have clearly demonstrated that he has refused to recognize and submit to the head of the Roman Catholic Church. This means that Viganò has been formally removed from the Church and cannot celebrate his own sacred rites such as the “Eucharist” or receive donations.
