Vatican updates on Pope Francis' health

The Vatican has provided new information with more details about the health of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis, the leader of the world's Catholics, who has been suffering from a respiratory infection for more than a week, was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy, on February 14.

The Vatican today provided further details about his health, saying: "Pope Francis has contracted double pneumonia, which affects both lungs, complicating the treatment of the 88-year-old pontiff. The pope's respiratory infection also includes asthmatic bronchitis, which requires treatment with antibiotics and cortisone."

The Vatican also issued a statement on the matter, saying: "Laboratory tests, chest X-rays and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture. The chest scan that the Holy Father received this afternoon showed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, which requires further medical treatment; however, he is in good spirits and is breathing on his own and does not require oxygen or a ventilator."

The Vatican also canceled all papal events, including Mass and a speech in St. Peter's Square, scheduled for Wednesday, February 19.
