Anti-tank mine explosion in Mehran border areas kills three

Some media outlets in Iran reported that three people were killed by a landmine explosion left over from the Iran-Iraq war.
Mehr News Agency reported on Monday, December 4, that a man and two women were killed in the border city of Mehran in western Iran after being hit by a landmine and its explosion. The news agency reported that the Ilam provincial police had also confirmed the explosion, adding that the mine that exploded was an anti-tank mine and that all three people died instantly from their injuries at the moment of the explosion.
The Iranian Broadcasting Corporation (IRCC) also announced the location of the mine explosion as "the Qalavizan operational area in the border city of Mehran."
The eight-year Iran-Iraq war ended about 29 years ago with a ceasefire, but the clearance of Iranian border areas from mines was never completed.
In recent years, news of the killing of border residents in the provinces of West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Ilam, Kermanshah, and Khuzestan has been published many times.
This summer, one person died in Sardasht and two in the border areas of Kurdistan, and a month ago, several people lost their lives in a mine explosion in the Changoleh border area of Mehran County.
Iranian officials had previously said that more than thirty million mines had been planted in the border areas of Iran and Iraq.
Although four years ago, Islamic Republic officials announced the complete clearing of mined areas, these mines are still claiming victims.
Some media activists had previously told the Voice of America Persian Service that the Islamic Republic is deliberately not completing the clearance of mined areas because it is concerned about the movement of Kurdish opposition groups between Iraq and Iran.
