Haft Tappeh sugarcane workers' protest rally enters third day

A new round of protests and strikes by workers at the Haft Tapeh Sugar Company continues.

Hundreds of workers at the Haft Tapeh Sugar Company gathered in front of the company's management office on Sunday, August 4, on the third day of strike and union protests.

Workers at Haft Tapeh Sugar Company have been facing backlogs of salaries and other union problems for years, and in recent years they have repeatedly held protests and strikes to protest the postponement of their demands.

Haft Tapeh Sugarcane Company has faced problems since its privatization in 2015, and has mostly delayed the payment of its workers' salaries. According to ILNA news agency, in the new protests, the workers announced that they are demanding at least three months of salaries.

On Saturday, the second day of the protest, the workers also demanded that ownership of the company be returned to the government.

Economic recession, bankruptcy of production units, and mismanagement have caused many workers to be deprived of their salaries and benefits, so much so that over the past year, one or more protest rallies have been held by workers almost every day.

Some reports indicate that over six thousand labor rallies have been held in the past year, mostly in protest of unpaid salaries for several months, mass layoffs, uncertainty following the transfer of factories to the private sector, and low wages.
