The Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the deadliest suicide attack in Iraq in three years on its Telegram channel.
Two terrorists detonated their explosive vests a short distance apart in the center of the busy market in Baghdad's Tayran Square. The suicide attack took place on Thursday morning, killing 32 people and wounding more than 110.
Iraq's security situation has improved significantly in recent years, but the country is still affected by the consequences of the battle with the terrorist group ISIS between 2014 and 2017. During this time, the Sunni extremist group held areas in northern and western Iraq.
During those years, as the Iraqi government and the US-led global coalition fought against ISIS, there were many suicide attacks in Iraq. The most recent and severe of these attacks was in January 2018, when two suicide bombers killed 38 people in a crowded Baghdad market.
