UN: 18,000 civilians killed and injured in airstrikes in Yemen war

A UN panel said on Wednesday that at least 18,000 civilians have been killed or injured in airstrikes in Yemen since the war began in 2015.

A group of UN experts stated in a report submitted to the Human Rights Council that the people of Yemen have witnessed an average of 10 airstrikes every day, with a total of more than 23,000 airstrikes since March 2015.

According to the report, it has been determined that both sides in the war have violated international law, however, all airstrikes have been attributed to the Saudi-led coalition.

The Iranian-backed Houthi militias have taken control of large parts of the country, especially the capital Sanaa, since 2015. The legitimate Yemeni government, based in Aden, in the south of the country, has been at war with the Houthis since March 2015, in cooperation with a Saudi-led military coalition.

The Yemeni war, which is referred to as a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, has become one of the most complex crises in the region and internationally over the past six years.

According to the United Nations, Yemen is grappling with the world's largest humanitarian crisis in terms of famine, and tens of thousands of children have died due to famine during the war in the country.
