Amnesty International condemns harsh sentences for labor and civil society activists in Iran

Amnesty International issued a statement on Monday, strongly condemning the issuance of heavy prison sentences to labor and civil society activists in Iran.

This human rights organization considered the issuance of these sentences a sign of "shameful injustice" in the Iranian judicial system and called on the authorities of the Islamic Republic to immediately and unconditionally release these activists.

Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Moghiseh, recently sentenced Esmaeil Bakhshi, a labor activist and representative of the protesting workers of the Haft Tappeh sugarcane complex, to 14 years in prison on security charges.

Sepideh Gholian, Sanaz Allahyari, Amirhossein Mohammadifar, Amir Amirgholi, and Asal Mohammadi, five civil society activists and members of the online publication Gam, have also been sentenced to 18 years in prison each, and labor activist Mohammad Khanifer has been sentenced to six years in prison.
