The general outline of the plan to "intensify punishment for acid throwing" with the death penalty was approved.

While one-third of the world's executions take place in Iran, members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly included the death penalty in the plan to increase punishment for acid attacks and approved the general outline of the plan.

On Monday, in a public session, the representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly approved the general outline of this draft with 206 votes in favor, 4 votes against, and 3 abstentions.

In the plan to increase the punishment for acid throwing, "death" is considered one of the punishments for acid throwing.

Regarding the details of this plan, MP Fatemeh Hosseini told ISNA that in the issue of intensifying the punishment for acid throwing, in addition to "retribution for the soul or limb," according to the amount of blood money for the body parts, 1st to 4th degree imprisonments are foreseen.

The inclusion of the death penalty in this plan comes at a time when acid attack victims have said that they do not want the death penalty.

Marzieh Ebrahimi, one of the victims of acid attacks in Isfahan, said they want to "stop the cycle of violence," not executions.

According to a report by Amnesty International, a total of 253 executions were carried out in Iran last year, which is more than a third of all recorded executions in the world.
