Human Rights Organization: 168 People Executed in Iran Over Five Months

Iran Human Rights Organization, based in Norway, reported an increase in the number of executions in Iran during the first five months of 2022, stating that this figure increased by more than one and a half times compared to the same period last year.

According to the report, at least 168 people were executed in Iran during the first five months of the current year, while this figure was 110 in the same period last year.

The organization, which tracks and publishes news about executions in Iran, said that May 2022 (coinciding with the beginning of protests in February of this year) recorded the highest monthly execution rate since 2018.

The report stated: “Examining the trend of executions in Iran shows that political events have a direct impact on the number of executions. For example, on the eve of elections that require public votes, executions decrease, and at times of protests, execution statistics rise.”

According to the report, more than 25 percent of this year’s executions are related to Baloch prisoners.

Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, director of Iran Human Rights Organization, said: “Execution is the most important political tool of the government for suppressing and intimidating society, and the weak segments of society are the low-cost victims of these executions.”

Amiri-Moghaddam called on the international community to prevent further executions in Iran by raising the political cost of these executions. Iran Human Rights Organization and several other human rights organizations reported on Monday, June 6, a mass execution of 12 prisoners on charges such as premeditated murder and drug trafficking in Zahedan Prison.

According to Iran Human Rights Organization’s report on Thursday, June 9, at least five prisoners were hanged in prisons in Khalkhal, Kermanshah, Birjand, and Ardabil.

Including these executions, from the beginning of the current year until June 9 (corresponding to June 19), at least 191 people have been executed in Iran.

According to the report, two of those executed were reportedly “child offenders.” The high number of executions and executions of “child offenders” in Iran in recent years has consistently been at the forefront of international criticism of the Islamic Republic’s conduct.

The Islamic Republic is among the few governments in the world that violates the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and continues to execute individuals who were under 18 years old at the time of the crime.

According to Amnesty International’s report, last year Iran and Yemen were the only countries that hanged “child offenders.” Amnesty International announced in its annual report on June 3 this year that in 2021, Iran, with at least 314 executions, was responsible for 54 percent of all recorded executions in the world.

Moreover, Amnesty International states that most people executed in Iran have been deprived of fair trial proceedings and their confessions were obtained under torture.

After China, Iran is the second country in the world in terms of the high number of executions.
