Iran Confirms Upcoming Visit of Qatar’s Emir to Tehran

Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, confirmed on Monday, April 9, that an official visit by Qatar’s Emir to Tehran is on the agenda of both countries.

Reuters reported on Sunday that Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, before his imminent travel to Germany, Britain, and several other European countries with the aim of attempting to help revive the JCPOA, will meet with senior Iranian officials in Tehran.

Saeed Khatibzadeh, at a press conference on April 9, without connecting the Qatari emir’s visit to efforts to revive the JCPOA, stated that Sheikh Tamim’s meeting will take place in response to Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Doha in March, and after that, Mr. Raisi will also visit another country in the Persian Gulf region. He did not mention the name of this southern neighbor of Iran.

However, Tehran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized that “issues related to Iran-Qatar relations, regional and international matters will be on the agenda of discussions between Qatar’s Emir and Iranian officials.”

Reuters, citing a source, reported that given the deadlock and prolonged stalemate in the Vienna talks between Iran and the remaining JCPOA parties, the Qatari emir’s efforts are aimed at reaching a middle-ground solution.

According to Reuters, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s insistence on removing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from the U.S. list of foreign terrorist organizations has locked the negotiations.

IRNA reported on April 7 that during the Qatari emir’s visit to Tehran and European countries, discussions will be held on solutions for collecting Iran’s debts and unfreezing Iran’s blocked assets.

IRNA suggested that given Qatar’s new role as a “non-NATO U.S. ally,” the Qatari emir may also work to improve relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Two years ago, the Qatari emir also visited Tehran when tensions between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States escalated following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s order to kill Qasem Soleimani, the former commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in an attempt to prevent the situation from worsening.

According to Iranian media reports, during Sheikh Tamim’s upcoming visit to Tehran, several cooperation agreements signed between the two countries during Ebrahim Raisi’s recent visit to Doha will be followed up.

The presence of Qatar’s Emir in Tehran will be the visit of the second leader of one of the region’s important countries to Iran within a few days.

Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria, also visited Tehran on Sunday this week in an unprecedented and unexpected meeting, where he met and held talks with Iran’s Supreme Leader and President.
