Member of Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran Transferred to ‘Solitary Confinement After 21 Years of Imprisonment’

The human rights organization Hengaw states that Khaled Freidouni, a peshmerga member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, who has been serving in Urmia Central Prison without furlough for 21 years, has been transferred to solitary confinement following a hunger strike to obtain leave.

Mr. Freidouni, who was arrested in September 2000, was initially sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court on charges of enmity against God through membership in the Kurdistan Party of Iran, but this sentence was changed to life imprisonment in the appeals court.

Hengaw writes that since Omer Faghirpoor, another defendant in this case, was granted amnesty after 21 years of imprisonment, Mr. Freidouni also sent a letter to the Urmia Intelligence Bureau requesting his release or at least a furlough, but they responded saying “You are the primary defendant in this case and your sentence is life imprisonment, so you will neither be released nor have the right to furlough”.

The organization states that Freidoun Khalili was transferred to solitary confinement by order of the Urmia Prison warden following his protest against the rejection of his request by the Intelligence Bureau and simultaneously with his announcement of a hunger strike.
