Death Sentence Issued for 25-Year-Old Political Prisoner Arghavan Falahi

The issuance of a death sentence for Arghavan Falahi, a 25-year-old political prisoner held in Evin Prison, has sparked a fresh wave of human rights reactions. The sentence, issued by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court under the presidency of Judge Abolghasem Salavati, was announced amid reports from human rights organizations that the prisoner has been denied free access to a lawyer, held for months in solitary confinement, and subjected to severe pressure during interrogation.
Arghavan Falahi, a 25-year-old political prisoner, has been sentenced to death according to reports published by human rights organizations. The sentence was issued in June 2026 by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court and communicated to her. She is currently being held in the women’s ward of Evin Prison.
Based on released information, the main charge against Falahi is termed “moharebeh” (enmity against God); a charge that judicial authorities have linked to membership in groups opposed to the Islamic Republic and alleged participation in armed activities. The verdict was issued by Judge Abolghasem Salavati, head of Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.
Reports released by human rights sources indicate that Arghavan Falahi spent months in solitary confinement following her arrest and was subjected to prolonged interrogations and severe physical and psychological pressure during this period. These reports also emphasize that she was denied free access to a lawyer of her choice at various stages of judicial proceedings—a matter that, from the perspective of human rights defenders, violates fair trial standards.
Arghavan Falahi’s case has a history extending beyond her recent detention. She had previously been arrested along with some family members, and this fact has been mentioned in human rights reports as part of her case history.
Following the announcement of this sentence, numerous human rights organizations and activists have called for immediate international action to prevent its execution. Meanwhile, this case is being raised at a time when international bodies have expressed concern in recent months over the increasing use of the death penalty in Iran, particularly in political and security cases, and have called for a halt to executions and adherence to fair trial standards.
One statement released regarding this case concludes with this plea: “We express our deep concern about the issuance of a death sentence for 25-year-old political prisoner Arghavan Falahi in Iran, and we call on the global community, human rights organizations, and UN special rapporteurs to take immediate action to stop the execution of this sentence and to support her fundamental rights.”
This statement also calls on international bodies and human rights defenders to take immediate action to prevent the execution of Arghavan Falahi’s death sentence.
