A prisoner's lips were sewn shut and he went on a hunger strike in Urmia Prison.

A prisoner in Urmia Prison has been on a hunger strike since Tuesday, November 17, by sewing his lips. 18 days after the end of his 1-year sentence, this prisoner has been prevented from being released, and his hunger strike was carried out with the aim of demanding his release from prison.

According to HRANA News Agency, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, today, Tuesday, November 17, 2020, a prisoner in Urmia Prison went on a hunger strike by sewing his lips.

The identity of this prisoner, “Hojat Kazemnejad from Dormitory 1-2 of Urmia Prison,” has been confirmed by HRANA.

Mr. Kazemnejad was sentenced to 1 year in prison for mass brawling, and now, 18 days after the end of his sentence, his release has been prevented. The prisoner's hunger strike was launched to demand his release from prison.

It is said that the court, in response to the follow-up of this prisoner and his family, claimed that his file was lost.

Hojjat Kazemnejad, 33 years old, married, lives in dormitory 1-2 of Urmia Prison.

Many prisoners in Iran go on hunger strikes as a last resort to achieve their demands. Many of these strikes have been in protest of the failure to address problems in their cases, the failure to respect the rights of prisoners or detainees, and long-term uncertainties.
