Abnormal Condition of the World’s Smallest Church in Sorkhabad Village, Suvadkuh

Sorkhabad Church is located opposite Sorkhabad railway station beside the main road, 2 kilometers away from Veresk Bridge, situated on top of the railway tunnel.

According to FCN report, this church was built in 1313 as a place of worship for railway workers who were Italian and German Christian engineers and had come to Suvadkuh to construct the railway.

On the church door is engraved text in Italian. The length and width of this church is 3 × 3 meters with one entrance door and 2 windows, one on the east side and another on the north side.

This church is built of brick and plaster, with the foundation made of mud brick and galvanized corrugated metal roofing. The church floor is concrete and its walls are covered with white cement. Sorkhabad Church has deteriorated over time, but was saved from destruction through the efforts of local residents, yet it is now on the verge of ruin.

In past years it served as a livestock stable until it was registered as a national monument. Currently, unfortunately, the church’s signage has been removed, its door is locked, and the authorities have indefinitely restricted access to the key, while it could serve as a historical site useful for attracting tourists.
