Advertising for Kidney Sales is “Violation”

Iran’s ISNA news agency reported on Tuesday, citing an official from Iran’s Ministry of Health, that advertising and promoting the sale of kidneys, whether virtually or at the city level, is “a violation”.
According to ISNA’s report quoting Mehdi Shadnoush, head of the transplant management and disease treatment center of the Ministry of Health, no law has been passed in this regard, but from the Ministry of Health’s perspective, this action has been forbidden and illegal from the outset.
However, for years in Iran, and especially in Tehran, advertisements can be seen throughout the city, mostly near hospitals, where individuals in need have advertised to sell their kidneys.
Shadnoush said: “Advertising about kidney sales or creating websites, networks, and advertising in this field is a violation, and the Ministry of Health is monitoring this matter.”
He also pointed out: “Laws must also be established so that no one has the right to advertise in this regard.”
This Ministry of Health official emphasized: “Monitoring illegal buying and selling of kidneys and advertising in this field is beyond the capabilities of the Ministry of Health. Therefore, other relevant organizations must also be involved.”
According to Shadnoush, “60 percent of kidney transplants [in Iran] are performed through brain-dead patients and 40 percent by living donors.”
