Amnesty International Calls for Release of Activists Detained in Recent Gatherings in Tabriz, Urmia, and Ardabil

Amnesty International expressed concern over the detention of protesters on Thursday in the cities of Tabriz, Urmia, and Ardabil, and called for their release.

The human rights organization’s Persian Twitter account stated that approximately 20 people who gathered in these cities on Thursday, October 1st, have been detained, with the names of some of them mentioned.

According to videos sent by witnesses to the Persian section of Voice of America, Iranian police used force against protesters on Thursday in Tabriz, Urmia, and Ardabil who took to the streets demanding the closure of the Iran-Armenia border to prevent what is said to be the transfer of Russian military equipment from Russia to Armenia through Iranian territory.

These videos show that police used tear gas and plastic bullets against protesters, some of whom were carrying posters.

According to the international human rights organization Amnesty International, some of these individuals have faced charges related to national security crimes such as “insulting the leadership,” “disrupting public order,” and “defying government officials” for participating in protest gatherings.
