Attaollah Bahmanyesh Passes Away

Attaollah Bahmanyesh, a renowned athlete, journalist, and sports correspondent of Iran, passed away at the age of 94. He had been hospitalized for the past month due to a stroke.

Attaollah Bahmanyesh, one of the oldest figures in Iranian sports news, died on Sunday evening (11 Tir / 2 July) at the age of 94 in Tehran. He had been hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Bank Melli Tehran Hospital for the past month following a stroke.

Attaollah Bahmanyesh began his career in December 1951 with the sports magazine “Nirou va Rasti” (Strength and Truth). From 1954 to 1958, he collaborated with the publication “Omid Iran” (Hope Iran) and subsequently joined the main writers of the weekly “Keyhan Varzeshi” (Keyhan Sports). He simultaneously worked with other sports publications as well.

Attaollah Bahmanyesh was also among the first live broadcasters of sports events, and his distinctive and thrilling voice during live sports coverage on Iranian radio and television remains vivid in the memories of many Iranians.

Beyond his journalism career, Mr. Bahmanyesh was also an athlete and was active in track and field, football, wrestling, tennis, and mountaineering. His primary interest was wrestling, and he served for five years as secretary and vice president of the Iranian Wrestling Federation.

Following the 1979 Revolution in Iran, Attaollah Bahmanyesh was removed from his position at the national radio and television. It is said that a few years later, he was invited again to work as a correspondent, but he was no longer willing to return to radio and television.

Attaollah Bahmanyesh also wrote several books in the field of sports and sports competition history, the most important of which are “Olympic Games from Beginning to Present” and “FIFA World Cup from Beginning to 2002”.
