Counterfeit Alcohol Consumption Claims Lives of Three in Golestan

The Public Relations Office of Golestan University of Medical Sciences reported the deaths of three people due to counterfeit alcohol consumption in the province in a single day.
IRIB News Agency reported on Thursday, December 5, citing Mohammad Reza Zare, director of Al-Jalil Aqqala Hospital, that two consumers of counterfeit alcohol who had presented to the hospital the previous day developed critical conditions in the early morning hours and died.
Mr. Zare then added that a third person also died several hours after them.
He did not specify the age and gender of these individuals, but urged those experiencing poisoning symptoms from counterfeit alcohol consumption to seek medical care as soon as possible.
Amir Shir Tomaj, Governor of Aqqala, also announced the opening of a special case to investigate the matter by security and law enforcement authorities in the city.
The production, sale, and distribution of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in Iran, and for this reason, numerous reports of citizen poisoning due to homemade or counterfeit alcohol consumption are published annually.
Following the outbreak of coronavirus in Iran, extensive reports were also published about deaths of individuals who, according to officials at universities of medical sciences in Iranian provinces, had consumed or gargled counterfeit alcohol for “prevention of coronavirus infection.”
