Mohammad Hossein Agassi, a lawyer, stated that eight signatories of an open letter to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei calling for his resignation from the position of Supreme Leader have been sentenced to 72 years in prison.
Mr. Agassi reported on his Twitter page that the Mashhad Revolutionary Court has not announced these sentences and he must visit the court to obtain copies of them.
According to him, Abdolrasoul Mortazavi has been sentenced to 26 years in prison and Mohammad Hossein Sepahri to six years in prison.
Hashem Khoastar has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, three years of exile to Nikshahr, and three years of travel ban.
Mohammad Nourizad’s sentence has been announced as 15 years in prison, three years of exile to Izeh, and three years of travel ban.
Fatema Sepahri has been sentenced to six years, and Hashem Rajaei, Mohammad Hossinpour, and Mortaza Qasemi have each been sentenced to one year in prison.
On June 11, 2024, fourteen civil and political activists inside Iran published an open letter calling for Ali Khamenei’s resignation from the leadership and fundamental changes to the Constitution.
Mohammad Nourizad, Mohammad Maleki, Engineer Hashem Khoastar, Gohar Eshqi, Abbas Vahedian Shahroudi, Huria Ferajzadeh, Kamal Jafari Yazdi, Mohammad Mahdavi Far, Javad Laleh Mohammadi, Reza Mehrgan, Mohammad Reza Beyat, Mohammad Karim Beghi, Zoroaster Ahmadi Ragheb, and Mohammad Hossein Sepahri had signed this letter.
According to these activists, in circumstances where “there is neither republicanism nor freedom,” civil activists’ negotiations “will lead nowhere without Ali Khamenei’s resignation and constitutional changes.”
Following that, fourteen female activists in Iran issued a statement calling for “Ali Khamenei’s resignation” and “transition away from the Islamic Republic.”
Most of the authors of these letters remain imprisoned and their court hearings have been held.
Reports have also been published regarding the poor physical condition of some detainees, including Mohammad Nourizad.
Meanwhile, ten civil activists who gathered in front of the Mashhad General and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office on August 10 in protest against the heavy prison sentence for Kamal Jafari Yazdi, one of the signatories of this letter, have been arrested.
