Gathering in Front of Zahedan Governor’s Office Following Death of Young Man Due to ‘Police Gunfire’

Reports from Sistan and Baluchestan province indicate that following the death of a young man in Zahedan due to police gunfire, a group of people gathered in front of the city’s governor’s office, and a number of them were arrested.

The law enforcement force has confirmed the young man’s death but stated that officers had pursued the young man due to his vehicle’s “obscured license plate.”

According to Iran’s police claim, the driver was wounded and died after being transferred to the hospital.

However, according to a report by the Baluch Activists Campaign website, Mousa Shahbakhsh died due to “not having a driver’s license” and not stopping at the officers’ checkpoint, and was killed as a result of “police gunfire.”

Reports add that “70 people” from Zahedan gathered on Monday, the sixth of Khordad, in protest of this incident in front of Zahedan’s governor’s office, and “the gathering dispersed after a number of them were arrested.”

According to this campaign, officers “arrested 30 people” from the protesters.

Based on released videos, a group of Zahedan residents set fire to a law enforcement vehicle hours after this incident in protest of the shooting of the young man.

Previously, several citizens of Sistan and Baluchestan province have been killed by police gunfire.

For example, in 2015 “as a result of gunfire” by forces from “Mohammadan Station” in Iranshahr at a vehicle “suspected of carrying diesel fuel,” the vehicle overturned and its two passengers burned to death due to “the diesel fuel catching fire.”

This incident caused “tension and unrest” in the region and “residents of villages near Mohamadabad and Karimabad near the incident site rushed to Mohamadabad station with stones and sticks,” and their protests continued for several days.
