Heavy snowfall and avalanches in Gilan leave seven dead and 78 injured

Pirouz Kouliyoand, head of the National Emergency Organization, announced on Tuesday, February 22 that seven people have died in Gilan due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.

According to the Fars News Agency, at least five people have died over the past two days due to avalanches in Rudbar in Gilan province, and two others have lost their lives due to falling from heights and roof collapse in Rasht.

According to this report, 78 others were also transferred to medical centers due to trauma from falls and injuries, and no update has been reported on their medical condition so far.

Meanwhile, the head of the traffic command and control center of the National Police Traffic Police has warned those heading to Gilan province about traveling to the region.

Colonel Nader Rahmani stated that snowfall in Gilan province continues, and given the intensity of precipitation and the volume of snow in the province, the police strongly recommend that people refrain from traveling to Gilan province until further notice and postpone their travel to another time.

This Iranian traffic police official, referring to the fact that the old road and the Qazvin-Rasht highway are closed due to snowfall, said: The Saravan to Fouman route and the Imam Hashem road are also closed. On the Saravan to Rasht route, only one lane is open for movement towards Rasht.

In this regard, the acting director of Gilan’s meteorological forecasting and rapid warning department stated about the amount of snowfall in some cities of the province: Snowfall in cities such as Masouleh has reached one meter, Rasht between 50 to 80 centimeters, Lahijan 70 centimeters, and Astara 46 centimeters.

He predicted that with the departure of the precipitation system from Gilan province, snowfall in the province will stop and Wednesday the province will experience frost.

The public relations manager of the Electricity Distribution Company of Gilan had previously stated that due to heavy snowfall, the number of subscribers without electricity in the province has increased to approximately 250,000 subscribers. Gilan has 1,462,000 electricity subscribers.

According to the IRNA news agency, Hamidrezā Hekmat announced the cities experiencing power outages as Rasht, Soumeah Sara, Fouman, Shaft, Anzali, Roudsar, Langarud, Lahijan, and Astaneh Ashrafieh, and added that the most severe power outages were in Astaneh Ashrafieh and Lahijan counties.
