Interior Ministry Advisor: November 2019 Protest Report Submitted to Rouhani

Ruhollah Jomeh-ai, advisor to Iran’s Interior Minister, stated that following the November 2019 (Aban 98) protests, a “detailed and expert report” regarding these events has been presented to Hassan Rouhani.

According to ISNA, Jomeh-ai said the report addressed “the causes of the events, a complete description of what occurred, and precise damage assessment” of the November 2019 protests and “the performance of various involved sectors.”

Hasam-al-Din Ashna, an advisor to Hassan Rouhani, had previously stated in an interview with the August issue of “Andisheh Poya” monthly magazine that Iran’s president has not yet “received a clear, defensible report on November casualties.”

He did not clarify which institution should provide this report, but stated that regarding the death toll from November 2019, “the police force says one thing, the Interior Ministry says another, and the Health Ministry states a different number.”

Previously, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, Iran’s Interior Minister, stated that between 200 and 225 people were killed in the November 2019 protests.

However, this figure has been seriously disputed by opposition groups and international human rights organizations.

Amnesty International, in its latest report on the November 2019 protests, stated that at least 304 people were killed during the November 2019 protests in 37 cities across 8 provinces in Iran. The organization emphasized that the actual number of November 2019 casualties was likely significantly higher than this figure.

Reuters news agency reported on December 20, 2019, stating that the leader of the Islamic Republic “ordered the bloodiest crackdown on protesters in four decades,” noting that 1,500 people were killed during these protests.

The November 2019 protests erupted following the government’s sudden announcement of a 200-percent increase in gasoline prices in many Iranian cities, but were met with security forces crackdowns and a complete internet shutdown.
