Keyvan Samimi Arrested and Transferred to Evin Prison

Keyvan Samimi, editor-in-chief of “Iran Tomorrow” magazine, has been transferred to Evin Prison. Mr. Samimi was previously sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Tehran Revolutionary Court, and this verdict was confirmed by the Tehran Province Court of Appeals.

The human rights news agency “Hrana” reported that Keyvan Samimi, editor-in-chief of “Iran Tomorrow” magazine and one of those arrested on International Workers’ Day in front of Parliament, was arrested on Monday, December 7 (17 Azar) after appearing at the Evin Prosecutor’s Office execution unit and transferred to Evin Prison to serve his sentence.

Keyvan Samimi was previously sentenced to three years imprisonment by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, headed by Judge Iman Afshari, on charges of “gathering and conspiracy with intent to act against the country’s security.” This verdict was upheld on appeal by Branch 36 of the Tehran Province Court of Appeals, headed by Judge Ahmad Zargar.

The arrest of Keyvan Samimi and his transfer to Evin Prison, given his advanced age, has sparked considerable protests, especially on social media.

Zia Nabavi, political activist and one of the students imprisoned after the 2009 elections, wrote on Twitter: “Keyvan Samimi, despite his advanced age and illnesses, has been sent to prison to serve a three-year sentence so that the security of the tyrants remains intact.”

Bahare Hedayat, political prisoner and women’s rights activist, also posted on Twitter stating that Keyvan Samimi, at age 71, has been sent to prison.

Keyvan Samimi’s participation in the International Workers’ Day ceremony in 2019 was considered by the judiciary as “propaganda against the system” and “gathering and conspiracy against national security,” and he was sentenced to three years in prison because of these charges.

On June 18, 2019, he was temporarily released from prison by paying bail. In April of this year, the court sentenced him to five years in prison. Branch 36 of the Court of Appeals upheld his three-year sentence.

Keyvan Samimi stated in a Telegram post at that time that the confirmation of the verdict took place without his presence and that of his lawyer, and was based on the statements of “security interrogators.”
