Marco Rubio’s Warnings: When Washington Takes Peace Hostage to Israel’s Policies

As Washington has taken peace hostage to Israel’s policies, Marco Rubio warned about recognizing Palestine.
Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, claimed in recent remarks that recognizing Palestine as a country would deepen the crisis, but critics argue that Washington’s policies themselves are the main factor in perpetuating war and mistrust.
The U.S. Secretary of State, during a visit to Ecuador and meetings with the country’s officials, once again took a clearly pro-Israel stance and warned against the decision of several European countries to recognize Palestine as a state. He explicitly stated: “We have told all these countries that if they recognize Palestine, all of this is fake and unreal. If you do this, you will create problems.”
His remarks come at a time when the Gaza war since October 7, 2023 has left thousands of casualties, and calls for stopping violence and finding a political solution are growing by the day. Nevertheless, Washington, instead of supporting the formation of an independent Palestinian state, has once again prioritized Israel’s concerns and warned that such action would only provoke harsher reactions from Tel Aviv.
In another part of his remarks, Rubio, referring to the discussion of Israel’s annexation of parts of the West Bank, emphasized: “Such action will provoke reactions and will make reaching a ceasefire in Gaza Strip more difficult. It could also lead to actions of this kind that you have witnessed, or at least attempts at such actions.”
Although he claimed that this matter is not yet finalized, his description of this process as a completely foreseeable issue showed that the U.S. government is aware of Israel’s expansionist policies and continues to remain silent or complicit.
Rubio further insisted that a unilateral declaration of recognition of Palestine would not be a way to create an independent state and added: “A Palestinian state will not emerge this way. A Palestinian state will not be established this way, nor by holding a press conference somewhere.” However, critics remind that this very logic has long been an excuse for delaying the formation of a Palestinian state and has resulted in nothing but continued occupation and deepening of the crisis.
Analysts believe that Rubio’s remarks, more than being an effort to resolve the crisis, demonstrate America’s long-standing policy of justifying Israel’s actions and preventing any serious international pressure on Tel Aviv. From their perspective, although Washington claims to be a mediator, in practice, by threatening and warning European countries not to recognize Palestine, it has shown that it stands at the forefront of obstruction against peace.
On the eve of the UN General Assembly session in New York, several European governments have announced they will move toward recognizing Palestine as a state, but America’s warnings demonstrate the continuation of a policy that has long delayed peace and transformed Palestinians’ right to self-determination into a matter completely dependent on Israel’s interests.
The reality is that the United States has once again shown it has no will to reduce violence in Gaza or create a real pathway for the formation of a Palestinian state. Rubio’s warnings to Europe are nothing more than a continuation of the traditional policy of holding peace hostage for Israel’s benefit. Instead of using its position of power to end killing and occupation, Washington is effectively playing the role of Israel’s political shield. This approach not only prolongs the crisis but further erodes global trust in America’s claims about democracy, human rights, and mediation.
