Over 55% of Iranians Aged 65 and Above Are Edentulous

The head of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences says more than 55% of Iranians over 65 years old are edentulous (without teeth).

Aliresa Zali said in a press conference at Shahid Beheshti University that tooth decay is a widespread issue affecting Iranian society and dental health should be considered as a serious health matter.

Stating that “87% of Iranian children under six years old have decayed teeth,” he added: “Every Iranian has six decayed teeth in their mouth.”

High treatment costs in Iran have made it impossible for many people to afford dental care expenses. Khabaronline website previously reported that the high cost of dental treatment is one of the factors contributing to edentulism in Iran, alongside financial difficulties of people and lack of sufficient money for dental treatments.
