Dozens of Environmental Organizations Criticized Water Transfer Projects in Iran

Nearly 40 environmental organizations across Iran sent a letter to Ebrahim Raisi, the President of the Islamic Republic, criticizing water transfer projects in the country, particularly in the headwaters of the Karun River.

In their letter, these organizations wrote that these projects were implemented under the guise of law while circumventing it, and lacked the necessary legal permits.

According to “Iran Water” magazine, the signatories of the letter, referring to the hasty decision to implement the second phase of a 550,000-hectare agricultural plan in Khuzestan Province, stated that this decision was made during Ebrahim Raisi’s visit without considering the water source for the plan and the dangerous condition of the province’s wetlands.

Among the signing organizations are Tasnim Environmental Association, Friends of Karun Nature’s Voice, Sabz Payaan Association, Green Movement Society of Zagros, Mountain Observer Association, and the Farmer’s House of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province.
