Qazvin Mayor Requests Evacuation of One of City’s 70 Unsafe Towers

The mayor of Qazvin has sent a letter to the owners of the Persian Gulf Tower in the city, requesting them to evacuate the building within one week.

Mehr News Agency reported on Thursday, June 23rd, that the letter references the Qazvin prosecutor’s order as well as repeated warnings from Qazvin Municipality and the Fire Department and Safety Services regarding the unsafe condition of the Persian Gulf Tower building.

The letter states that if the tower is not evacuated, Qazvin Municipality will take action to evacuate and seal off the building in coordination with law enforcement command and other relevant authorities.

The report adds that the evacuation request for this single building has been announced while, according to a statement by the director general of the provincial governor’s urban affairs and municipalities office in Qazvin, there are 70 structurally unsafe towers in Qazvin.

On Thursday, a decision was also announced to evacuate the medical department of Rasoul Akram Hospital in Tehran due to the lack of necessary building safety standards.

Reza Karimi-Mohammadi, head of Tehran Municipality’s Prevention and Crisis Management Organization, recently announced that “50 hospitals in Tehran lack safety standards, and whenever permitted, we will announce their names.”

Following the collapse of the Metropol Building in Abadan and the deaths of dozens of people under the rubble, authorities have announced the inspection of a number of government and private buildings.
