Revolutionary Guards Announce Elimination of “Terrorist Team” in Kurdistan

The public relations office of the Revolutionary Guards command in western and northwestern Iran announced in a statement released on the morning of June 23rd that it has “eliminated a terrorist team in Kurdistan.”

The public relations office of the “Hamza Seyyed al-Shuhada” command stated in a brief statement that “a terrorist team that intended to carry out terrorist acts and create insecurity within the country was identified this morning (Friday) by fighters” of this command. According to the Revolutionary Guards, following clashes with this group, three of its members were killed and one other was arrested.

The statement continued that this “team” was affiliated with “global arrogance” and “several” weapons and ammunition were seized from them.

No details have been released regarding the exact location of the clash, the killed individuals, and the arrested person, and it is unclear what quantity and type of weapons and ammunition were obtained by Revolutionary Guards forces. The phrase “global arrogance” is terminology used by the leader of the Islamic Republic and officials close to him when referring to the United States and several other countries.

The Hamza Seyyed al-Shuhada command operates in the provinces of West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and Kermanshah and, as the Revolutionary Guards state, was established “to coordinate territorial defense activities against counter-revolutionary and infiltration forces in the western and northwestern parts of the country.”

The Revolutionary Guards’ statement Friday morning is the latest of its kind following the deadly Tehran attacks and subsequent events. A group called the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the Tehran attacks. In the statement released by the Revolutionary Guards command, there is no reference to any possible connection between these individuals and the group called the Islamic State or the Tehran attacks.

A week prior to this, Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB published news on its Telegram channel about a clash occurring at Iran’s western borders, stating that “a Daesh team entered the country from the Somar border on Friday evening, but this group was eliminated and four of them were arrested following airstrikes by security forces.” Shortly afterwards, two Iranian officials denied reports of clashes with this group at Iran’s western borders, including in West Gilan and Sarpol-e Zahab.

Four days earlier, the representative of Urmia in the Islamic Consultative Assembly had reported the “identification” and “arrest of 40 members” of the “Islamic State” group in West Azerbaijan Province. The judiciary of Fars Province announced on June 21st that prison sentences have been issued for “6 Daesh operatives,” and on June 18th, the ground forces of the Revolutionary Guards reported that a “terrorist team” was “grounded” in Qasrqand, Sistan and Baluchestan.

On June 19th, the Revolutionary Guards announced that it had fired six missiles at positions of the Islamic State group in Deir ez-Zor Province, Syria.
