Shahram Nazeri Defends Protesters: People Are Pursuing Their Rights

Shahram Nazeri, the renowned Iranian singer, said on Monday, Ordibehesht 26, in response to protests in the country that people are pursuing their rights because their rights have been trampled and protest is also their right.

Mr. Nazeri, on the sidelines of a ceremony honoring him in Erbil, the center of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, told reporters that conditions have not been provided as the people deserve; therefore, it is natural that they claim their rights.

In a video of this traditional music singer’s interview released on social networks, he continues to say that people have had enough.

Shahram Nazeri said: People are hungry and it is not befitting that they should be submerged up to their waist in garbage and be ashamed before their families. People are in great hardship and they want their rights and they must claim them.

So far, a number of prominent figures, including Voria Ghafouri, captain of Tehran’s Esteghlal football team, and Jafar Panahi, Iran’s critical filmmaker, have reacted to these protests and their violent suppression.

The recent popular protests, which were sparked in mid-Ordibehesht of this year following the official announcement of bread price increases and its rationing, and in response to the multi-fold increase in food prices in recent months, ignited in a number of cities in Khuzestan, are still ongoing and have spread to other provinces.
