Temporary Marriage Leaves Woman in Tehran Engulfed in Flames

A man in Tehran set fire to his temporary wife and her house.
Temporary marriages in Iran have expanded significantly compared to previous years, as women resort to temporary marriages to meet their living needs due to poverty, family hardship, and many other issues that reflect societal poverty. In many cases, these temporary unions not only bring numerous problems such as unwanted pregnancies into the lives of women and their children, but sometimes also cause irreversible dangers to themselves and their children.
In recent years, media outlets have also reported murders of individuals who became victims of temporary marriages. Even children and adolescents have fallen victim to temporary marriages.
Now, a woman in Tehran, along with her young child, has become a victim of a temporary marriage, resulting in her being consumed by flames.
According to news agency “Hrana,” the case of a man who set fire to his temporary wife and her house in Tehran yesterday has been referred to Tehran Province’s Criminal Court.
Yesterday, a house fire in south Tehran was reported to police officers. Following the report that a woman named “Mehrsa” had been injured in the fire and transferred to a hospital, police officers decided to visit the hospital to investigate the incident.
According to the injured woman’s account, she had entered into a temporary marriage with a man named “Samiyar” for one month. According to Mehrsa’s claims, Samiyar was a very violent man, and despite claims of affection, his violence was so severe that Mehrsa decided not to renew the temporary marriage period.
Mehrsa continued her account, saying: “Samiyar was opposed to the separation and wanted the temporary marriage period to be renewed. One day when I was at home with my young son, Samiyar entered with a gallon of gasoline. He poured the gasoline on me and throughout the house. Before he could light the lighter, he threw my son out of the room. He lit the lighter and I caught fire, and he immediately fled. I wrapped a blanket around myself and extinguished the fire. At that moment, neighbors arrived and put out the house fire and took me to the hospital.”
Mehrsa’s hands, feet, parts of her body, and face have been burned and she remains under medical treatment, but she is unable to perform personal care or look after her young child.
Samiyar was also arrested after some time and confessed to his actions against his temporary wife and her house. He claimed he did not intend to kill Mehrsa but only intended to frighten her into continuing the temporary marriage.
The case has been referred to Branch 11 of Tehran Province’s Criminal Court, and the suspect will be tried soon.
