Urmia Prison: Failure to Address Deputy Askari’s Condition Despite Poor Physical Health

Hrana News Agency – Deputy Askari, a political prisoner held in Urmia Prison, has been deprived of proper medical and treatment services despite unsuitable physical conditions.
According to a report by Hrana News Agency, the news organ of the Iranian Human Rights Activists Collection, Deputy Askari, a political prisoner in Urmia Prison, has been deprived of proper medical and treatment services.
An informed source told Hrana in this regard: “Mr. Askari lost consciousness due to convulsions today, and despite other prisoners’ appeals to prison officers and the medical unit, no action has been taken by prison authorities regarding this sick prisoner so far.”
This informed source further added: “The detention conditions of political prisoners in Urmia Prison have become much worse since their transfer to the security ward on December 10th, and prisoners in this ward are deprived of direct access to medical facilities.”
Deputy Askari, who suffers from kidney disease, went on a hunger strike on June 25, 2021, due to not being transferred to a hospital despite the prison doctor’s diagnosis, and ended his strike after some time.
Deputy Askari was arrested on March 27, 2022, by IRGC Intelligence agents in Urmia and transferred to one of this security agency’s detention centers. He was finally transferred to the city’s prison on June 18th after completing interrogation procedures at the IRGC Intelligence detention center. The charge against Mr. Askari is stated as cooperation with one of the opposition parties.
On July 12th, regarding a case opened with a complaint filed by Amir Sohrabi, the head of Urmia Prison, he received a charge notification at Branch 1 of Urmia Prosecutor’s Office, and was ultimately sentenced by Branch 119 of the Criminal Court of Urmia District to three months of imprisonment and 50 lashes regarding charges including “disrupting prison order.”
