US Secretary of State’s Tweet about Iran: When the Regime Steals from Its People, It Destroys the Country’s Economy

The US Secretary of State, referring to the prediction of a decline in Iran’s economic growth, attributed this decline to the actions of the Islamic Republic government, including the wastage of Iran’s capital in Syria.

Mike Pompeo wrote on Monday, October 28, in a tweet that the International Monetary Fund has predicted that Iran’s economic growth will decline by 3.6 percent in the coming year.

Mr. Pompeo further added: “When the ruling regime steals from its own people, and instead of creating jobs for Iranians, invests in (Bashar) Assad, it drives the country’s economy to destruction.”

Officials of the Trump administration, including Mr. Pompeo, have repeatedly referred to the destruction of Iran’s capital in regional countries.

The US Secretary of State also wrote three weeks earlier in a tweet: “While the Iranian people are struggling with economic problems, the Islamic Republic of Iran has spent more than $16 billion since 2012 to strengthen Bashar Assad, the President of Syria, and his proxy groups in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.”

The United States government considers the behavior of the Islamic Republic in the region, including interference in the countries of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, to be destructive.

President Trump announced in April of this year by issuing an order for America’s withdrawal from the JCPOA, stating that the JCPOA does not prevent the Islamic Republic from achieving nuclear weapons, while also making Iran’s behavior in the region more aggressive.

Mike Pompeo also on May 21 by announcing a new US strategy toward Iran, enumerated 12 conditions of the United States for an agreement with the Islamic Republic, which are in fact a list of US demands from the Islamic Republic, or in other words, the details of changing the behavior of the Iranian regime.

Some of these conditions include stopping support for Houthi militias in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran’s complete withdrawal from Syria.
