Ebrahim Raisi replaced Tehran's prosecutor; A look at Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi's record

After Ebrahim Raisi became head of the Iranian judiciary, the Tehran Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor was removed from office after 10 years.

On Monday, May 29, Iranian media reported the change of Tehran's Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor, writing that Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi had stepped down from this position and "Ali Al-Qasi Mehr" had been appointed as Tehran's Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor. Al-Qasi Mehr was previously the head of the Fars Province's judiciary, who was appointed to this position by Raisi.

From the repression after 88 to the silent death of prisoners

After the events of the 2009 elections and the Kahrizak incident, Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi was replaced by Sadegh Amoli Larijani as the Public Prosecutor and Revolutionary Prosecutor.

However, judicial encounters with protesters continued during Jafari Dolatabadi's tenure as prosecutor. The issue of arresting leaders of the 2009 election protesters, dealing with opponents of compulsory hijab, arresting and severely confronting girls on Enghelab Street, and arresting civil and political activists also feature prominently in Jafari Dolatabadi's case file.

During his tenure as prosecutor, environmental activists were arrested in Iran. The suspicious death of environmental activist Kavoos Seyed Emami in custody and the detention of other environmental activists for more than a year without trial drew widespread criticism.

The death of "Sina Ghanbari," a 22-year-old young man who was arrested during the protests in January 2017, occurred in a detention center during the Jafari-Dowlatabadi era. A year later, Sina Ghanbari's mother announced that her son had been murdered in prison.

The incident of the encounter with the Gonabadi dervishes and the clash with these dervishes in Golestan VII also occurred during his time as prosecutor.

The new appointment of Tehran's Public Prosecutor and Revolutionary Prosecutor by Ebrahim Raisi comes at a time when the head of the judiciary, in his first speech after being appointed by Ayatollah Khamenei, had said, "The administration of justice is subordinate to security. The issue of security is not an issue that can be neglected in the slightest."
