Italian nun who dedicated 26 years of her life to lepers expelled from Iran

The Iranian government has expelled an Italian nun of the Vatican Church who served for 26 years at the Baba Baghi leper house in Tabriz and had retired in the past few years.

According to Vatican News, Ms. Giuseppina Berti, a 75-year-old Italian nun, has dedicated more than a third of her life to helping lepers in Iran and has lived in the "Daughters of Charity" convent of the Catholic Church in Isfahan for the past four years since she retired.

The report adds that the Iranian government has not extended Ms. Berti's residency: Fabiola Weiss, another 77-year-old nun from the Convent of the Daughters of Charity, was able to obtain a residence permit in Iran for another year. This nun has also dedicated 38 years of her life to helping the needy and sick in Iran.

Vatican News writes that the Iranian government's action will also make the situation difficult for Ms. Weiss, who is now forced to stay alone in the Isfahan monastery.

The report states that over the past few years, the Italian nuns have had no activity outside the monastery, and it is unclear why the Iranian government has not renewed Ms. Berti's residence permit and has asked her to leave the country.

The Islamic Republic has always had an unfavorable view of other religions, even non-Shiite 12-Imam sects, and in recent years, many cases of arrests, trials, and even death sentences of Christian converts have been reported.
