From Genesis to Revelation in Four Days; A Sermon That Captured the Attention of the Christian World

In an era when most messages on social media are condensed in seconds, an American pastor decided to take a different approach to draw attention to God’s word. Matt Olson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Sharon in Mississippi, completed a continuous sermon lasting 96 hours, reviewing the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation; an effort that surpassed the official world record for the longest speech, but according to him, the primary goal was not breaking records, but proclaiming the Gospel message.

This four-day marathon took place in Olson’s church and began with the first book of the Old Testament and ended with the final book of the New Testament. The duration of this sermon exceeded the official record of 90 hours and 2 minutes held by a speaker from Nepal. However, church officials announced that due to the high costs of the registration process and the focus on spiritual ministry rather than media attention, they would not submit an official request to Guinness to register the record.

In explaining his motivation for undertaking this challenge, Olson said: “This was never about breaking a world record; my goal was simply to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” This emphasis led many Christians to view this event not as a personal competition, but as an example of commitment to evangelism and teaching of Scripture.

The idea for this project took shape following a particular experience in his life. During one of his missionary training programs, Olson had spent 96 hours in difficult conditions without access to the Bible. He later explained that this experience made him realize more than ever the importance of deeper understanding of God’s word and led him to think about presenting the entire Bible in the form of one long sermon.

Church leaders initially described the plan as impractical and even “crazy,” but ultimately supported its execution by providing medical, technical, and spiritual support teams. Church members also remained by his side around the clock to ensure the program concluded without problems.

Speaking about his ability to continue this lengthy sermon, Olson said: “God’s word is absolute truth and is sufficient for every human need. It was this truth that kept me standing for 96 hours; while physically, no human should be able to do such a thing.”

At the conclusion of this unprecedented marathon, he also made an effort to redirect attention away from himself and focus on Christ. The Baptist pastor said: “Jesus is Lord and deserves every word I preached and every sacrifice made for this ministry.”

For many observers and Christian leaders, this event was more than an unofficial world record; it was a reminder of the central place of Scripture in Christian faith and the importance of continual proclamation of the Gospel message in today’s world.
