Navid Afkari's sister reports destruction of her brother's grave

Elham Afkari, the sister of Navid Afkari, a wrestler executed in Iran, announced the destruction of her brother's burial site by posting a picture on social media.

This news was released an hour after Hossein and Hamid Afkari, Navid's father and brother, were detained by security forces for several hours at his burial site in the cemetery of Sangar village in Sepidan County, Fars.

In the caption of a photo he posted on his Instagram page, Elham Afkari wrote: "This is not a battlefield, this is the grave of our promise that they threw, took away, and destroyed."

An informed source told HRANA that the Afkari family had been under pressure during this time not to place a memorial stone on Navid Afkari's grave, and on Thursday, when Navid's father and brother were preparing the grave, they were arrested and released hours later.

Navid Afkari was executed and buried at night on September 12, despite numerous ambiguities announced by his lawyers and despite a global campaign opposing his execution.

He was arrested after participating in the August 2018 protests and was accused of murdering a security guard. Navid Afkari and his two brothers, Vahid and Habib, who are currently in prison, said during the trial that they were forced to accept responsibility for the murder under torture.

Navid Afkari's family has repeatedly sought information about the condition of Hamid and Habib Afkari in prison in recent months, but prison officials have not responded to them.

According to the court verdict, Vahid Afkari was sentenced to 54 years and six months in prison and 74 lashes, and Habib Afkari was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison and 74 lashes.

Leaving burial sites anonymous and unmarked, preventing funeral ceremonies, pressuring, threatening and intimidating families, and breaking tombstones are some of the cases that have been seen in the history of the Islamic Republic's security and judicial institutions over the past four decades.
