Alarm bells ring for Iranian refugees in Türkiye

Over the past few days, numerous reports have been received from Turkish cities regarding the arrest of Iranian refugees by Turkish police.

Until now, it was customary for the police to arrest an asylum seeker outside of their designated city of residence without leave, either by sending a letter to the police station, or by transferring the person to the city of residence after a few days of punitive detention, in the same manner, the person would be transferred to the desired city. This was done on a discretionary basis.

However, we are witnessing that the Turkish Immigration Office interviews asylum seekers separately from the UN interviews and reserves the right to reject the asylum seeker's application if they are not satisfied with the asylum seeker's answers. In previous years, if this had happened, the person would have appealed the decision of the Immigration Office to the city court, and the judge would have accepted the decision and ruled in favor of the asylum seeker, and the asylum seeker's application would have continued.

Among them, people who have passed the UN interview are also seen, and thus it makes no difference to the Turkish Immigration Office what security level the asylum seeker's case is at.

Unfortunately, according to reports received from Turkish cities, refugees have stated that some have been arrested by Turkish police for being in another city without leave and threatened with deportation to Iran. This is while the Turkish police do not even give Iranian refugees the right to choose a country to leave the country and deport the refugees directly to Iran.

In this regard, the UN in Ankara is not interested in monitoring the performance of such approaches, and they are content with saying that we cannot confront the Turkish government.

With this process, it seems that the Turkish Immigration Department and police have been given full authority to deport Iranian refugees to their home country for any reason. However, no official response has been given by the UN yet.

It should be emphasized that a serious alarm has been sounded for Iranian refugees in Turkey, and they must be careful not to leave their city without permission, otherwise they will face the serious threat of deportation to Iran.
