Colombia Severs Diplomatic Relations with Islamic Republic; Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi Responds
Colombia’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic has been met with a response from Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi; a move that Bogotá attributed to security concerns, what it described as the Islamic Republic’s connection to terrorist networks and transnational crimes, human rights violations, regional security developments, and obstacles created to the activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Following this decision, Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi welcomed Colombia’s government’s position and thanked the country’s president.
Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on September 24 that this country’s diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic have been formally severed as of September 19. However, this decision does not mean the termination of consular relations, and consular services between the two countries will continue. The Colombian government also emphasized that this decision was made within the framework of this country’s foreign policy to protect national security and hemispheric security and to combat transnational crimes.
Bogotá, in explaining its decision, also referred to what has been termed “human rights violations” in Iran, attacks on countries outside specific Middle Eastern conflicts, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the creation of obstacles to the monitoring activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Colombian government stated that this set of developments has reduced this country’s confidence in the Islamic Republic.
In response to this development, Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, in a message addressed to “Gustavo Francisco Petro” President of Colombia, wrote:
“Mr. President Gustavo Francisco Petro,
The Iranian nation is grateful to you and the Colombian nation for your principled decision to sever diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic. Colombia has taken a clear stance against terrorism, transnational crimes, and systematic human rights violations by the Islamic Republic. Iranians will never forget those who stand with them in the struggle for freedom.
I look forward to the day when a free Iran and Colombia establish solid relations and lasting friendship based on shared values of freedom, security, and democracy.”
This message was released as the Colombian government also emphasized in its official statement that defense of national sovereignty, protection of borders, and resistance to foreign interference are central pillars of this country’s foreign policy.
In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic stated that it will take “necessary measures” to safeguard the interests of the Islamic Republic and rejected the accusations raised by Colombia’s government against Iran and certain segments of the Islamic Republic’s armed forces.
Colombia’s severance of diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic, if continued, could become one of the indicators of a shift in Tehran’s relations with Latin American countries; a region in which the Islamic Republic has sought to expand its political and economic relations over recent decades. Meanwhile, Reza Pahlavi’s welcome of Bogotá’s decision shows that the issue of the Islamic Republic’s foreign relations has once again become linked to the question of Iran’s political future and the efforts of government opponents to gain international support.
