European Parliament Condemns ‘Largest Massacre of Protesters’ and Calls for Revolutionary Guards Isolation

The European Parliament, by issuing an unprecedented resolution, condemned the bloody suppression of protesters, the execution of opponents, and pressure on religious minorities in Iran, and called for broader sanctions against the Islamic Republic, the Revolutionary Guards, and the transnational suppression networks of this regime.

The European Parliament on Thursday voted with a decisive majority to approve a resolution that strongly condemned the violent suppression of protesters, increased executions, pressure on political prisoners, and violation of the rights of religious minorities in Iran. European Parliament representatives in this resolution, while expressing solidarity with the Iranian people, described the suppression of protests and the massacre of protesters in December 2025 as “the largest massacre of protesters in Iranian history.”

In this resolution, European Parliament representatives described the significant increase in issuing and carrying out death sentences as part of the Islamic Republic’s policy to create terror and prevent the formation of widespread protests, and called for the immediate revocation of all death sentences. The resolution also strongly condemned secret executions, including the execution of individuals under 18 years of age.

European Parliament representatives in another section of this resolution accused the Islamic Republic of systematic suppression of religious minorities, civil activists, women, and political opponents, and called for the immediate release of all political prisoners. They also asked member states of the European Union to close diplomatic missions related to the security activities of the Iranian government and fully implement existing sanctions to counter the Islamic Republic’s “transnational repression.”

One of the most important sections of this resolution is the call for expanded sanctions against the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and institutions affiliated with the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. The European Parliament also asked European countries to ban the entry of Revolutionary Guards members, affiliated forces, and their families into Europe and to freeze their assets.

During the session reviewing this resolution, members of the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran were also present and stated that the Islamic Republic’s actions in suppressing protesters could constitute “crimes against humanity.” This mission had previously reported in its findings on the widespread use of torture, execution, enforced disappearance, and organized suppression by the Iranian government against protesters.

The European Parliament’s resolution was finally approved with 516 votes in favor, 14 against, and 39 abstentions; statistics that demonstrate a broad consensus among European representatives against the Islamic Republic’s policies. Many analysts have described this resolution as one of the strongest formal European positions against the Islamic Republic in recent years; a position that targets not only internal repression but also the security activities of the Islamic Republic outside Iran’s borders.
