Pope Leo XIV: Iran-US Agreement is an Opportunity for Peace in the Middle East

Pope Leo XIV, welcoming the recent agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States to end Middle Eastern conflict, called on the leaders of both nations to transform this opportunity into a sustainable path toward peace. The leader of Catholics worldwide, who had repeatedly warned about the human consequences of war in recent months, regarded this agreement as an encouraging sign of dialogue’s triumph over violence and expressed hope that the region would enter a new phase of stability and cooperation after months of tensions and bloodshed.

Pope Leo, in his remarks at the Vatican, while expressing gratitude to those who played a role in shaping this agreement, emphasized that the future of the Middle East should not be built on military confrontation but rather on mutual trust and negotiation. He expressed hope that this agreement could strengthen regional security and pave the way for greater cooperation among Middle Eastern nations.

The Pope’s stance on the Iran war was clear from the very first days of the conflict. In several formal messages and speeches, he called for a halt to military operations and a return of parties to the negotiating table. The leader of the Catholic Church had warned: “The continuation of violence could plunge the region into an irretrievable abyss,” and emphasized that stability and peace cannot be built with mutual threats and weapons that create destruction, pain, and death, but rather are only achieved through reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue.”

Following the announcement of the recent agreement, he reiterated this position, saying: “Many issues still remain to be resolved, but it is always better to solve these matters through dialogue and negotiation rather than by returning to war.” The Pope also expressed hope that this agreement would truly be a solution to the war, that the war has genuinely ended, and that we can move forward for the good of all.

The leader of Catholics worldwide, in another section of his remarks, addressed the heavy human costs of war. He recalled that in recent months, many civilians have lost their lives and many people have been forced to leave their homes. The Pope also expressed regret over the damage to medical centers, religious sites, and cultural heritage during the conflicts and prayed for the victims of war and their families.

The Pope’s recent positions come at a time when he had been criticized by some political circles in recent months for his opposition to the war. However, he not only did not retreat from his position but emphasized the Church’s role in advocating for peace and declared that it is the duty of Christians to support human dignity and strive to prevent the spread of violence.

Pope Leo XIV’s message can be seen as a continuation of the Church’s longstanding tradition of opposing war and supporting diplomatic solutions; a message that, in the midst of global crises, once again emphasizes this Christian principle that lasting peace is not achieved through the barrel of a gun but through the path of dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual respect among nations.
