Washington Examiner: At Least Two Quds Force Members Intended to Kill Bolton

The Washington Examiner reported on Monday, March 7, citing a U.S. Department of Justice official, that “at least two members of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps” intended to assassinate John Bolton, the former U.S. National Security Advisor, during a time when nuclear negotiations were ongoing.

John Bolton holds hardline positions toward the Islamic Republic of Iran and has even supported military strikes to overthrow the regime.

The report adds that the findings of the U.S. government investigation and the Department of Justice provide “credible evidence” of an Iranian plot, but White House officials “insist that making this matter public could derail nuclear negotiations.”

The Washington Examiner writes that it is unlikely that secret indictments have been issued against Quds Force members involved in the plot to kill Bolton, but a Department of Justice official who requested anonymity told the publication that given the seriousness of the assassination plot and the existing evidence, an indictment should be issued immediately and made public.

The report states, citing a Department of Justice source, that recruiting an individual inside the United States was also part of the plan to carry out Bolton’s assassination.

The American publication adds that U.S. security agencies became aware of the Quds Force plot at the initial stages and have taken strict, round-the-clock protective measures for Bolton since late last year.

Jake Sullivan, the White House National Security Advisor, warned on December 10 this year that any attack by the Islamic Republic of Iran on American citizens would face “severe consequences.”

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran stated on December 13 on the second anniversary of the killing of Qasem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force: “The aggressor and murderer, the American president at the time, must face retaliation and God’s judgment must be carried out against him.”

Ebrahim Raisi had threatened that if judicial mechanisms were not established for the trial of former U.S. President Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and other individuals he described as “criminals,” then “the hand of vengeance will extend from the sleeve of the nation.”

The Forbes publication reported two months ago, citing four American sources, that threats against Pompeo and Bolton continue.
