Extension of the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran for another year

The UN Human Rights Council, at its meeting on Tuesday, July 22, extended the mandate of Javed Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, for another year.

The Human Rights Council website reported that 22 member states of the council agreed to extend Mr. Javid's mandate, eight countries voted against it, and representatives of 15 countries did not attend the meeting.

Mr. Rehman has been in charge since July 2018, following the death of Asma Jahangir, and his mandate can be extended for up to six terms each year.

On June 17, 39 human rights groups and organizations sent a joint letter to the UN Human Rights Council, asking member states to extend the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur.

The arrests and long-term prison sentences of labor activists, women's rights activists, journalists, environmentalists, as well as the issue of violations of religious freedoms are among the issues that these groups and organizations cited as reasons for the need to extend Javed Rahman's mandate.
