Corona alarm for people and policymakers
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Health expressed regret over the record-breaking death toll from the coronavirus, saying: "Certainly, as long as our hospitalizations in medical centers continue to increase, we should continue to witness a high number of deaths from the coronavirus in the country."
Simasadat Lari told ISNA news agency: "Unfortunately, today we witnessed a new record in the number of deaths of our dear compatriots due to the coronavirus."
He added: "As you can see, the number of daily hospitalizations in the country has reached its highest level since the outbreak of the disease in recent days, which can be considered a serious alarm for our people and policymakers."
Lari emphasized: "Certainly, as long as our hospitalizations in medical centers continue to increase, we should continue to see a high number of deaths from the coronavirus in the country."
Iran has one of the highest coronavirus cases in Asia and among countries in the region. However, due to economic considerations, serious restrictions are not being imposed to contain the new wave. Health experts recently called for a two-week lockdown, but the government refused to implement it due to the economic consequences of the lockdown.
On the other hand, the number of diagnostic tests and hospital capacities for treatment are much lower than in many Asian and Middle Eastern countries. The maximum number of daily tests in Iran is between 20,000 and 25,000, while in neighboring Turkey, this number is more than 140,000 tests per day.
