50% Decrease in Iranians’ Foreign Travel in 2018

The head of the Association of Air Travel Agencies for Tourism and Pilgrimage in Tehran said: According to information from the Ministry of Heritage, Culture, Handicrafts and Tourism, nearly 10 million Iranians traveled abroad in 2017, but this number dropped to 5 million people last year.

He stated: Experts suggest that this figure may decline further in the current year due to the reinstatement of exit taxes and travel levies. Iranians who had traveled to Europe in previous years switched to nearby countries such as the United Arab Emirates during Nowruz 2019. However, the increase in the value of the dirham has caused Iranians who still seek foreign travel to turn toward Turkey.
