Ali Larijani Announces Submission of Education Minister Impeachment Proposal to Presiding Board

Less than a week after the start of the new academic year, Ali Larijani, Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, announced that an impeachment proposal against the Education Minister has been submitted to the Presiding Board.

Mr. Larijani said today, the 7th of Mehr (September 28), that the impeachment request was submitted to the Presiding Board last Sunday after the sponsors failed to withdraw it, and the board should have announced its receipt earlier.

Shortly after Mr. Larijani’s remarks, Mohammad Ali Vakili, a member of the Parliament’s Presiding Board, told ISNA news agency that the impeachment proposal submitted to the Presiding Board today will not be announced as received until at least Sunday.

The signatures for this proposal had been collected more than a month ago, and several representatives announced their decision to impeach the Education Minister in late Mordad month.

Hosein Moghasedi, representative of Sabzevar in Parliament, had previously suggested that if the impeachment proposal is finalized, Mr. Fani may not succeed in maintaining his position.

If Mr. Fani’s impeachment proposal is confirmed, this will be the first impeachment of a minister in the tenth session of Parliament, which began its legislative term in early Khordad of this year (approximately four months ago).

The reason for the impeachment proposal against the Education Minister had previously been described as “imposing educational costs on citizens and reducing the quality of education in schools.”

Ali Asghar Fani was impeached by the ninth Parliament in Tir month of last year, but again received the confidence of the representatives and continued his work.

According to Gholamreza Tajgardoon, a reformist representative in Parliament, the most impeachments throughout Iran’s parliaments are related to impeaching the Education Minister.
