Archbishop “Christopher Allen Sanders” Charged with Sexual Crimes Against Children in Australia

Archbishop “Christopher Allen Sanders,” one of the highest-ranking officials of the Catholic Church in Australia, has been charged with sexual crimes against children.

Australian police reported 14 cases of sexual assault by Christopher Sanders. He was arrested following detailed investigations by the Australian Church on charges of committing sexual crimes. The 74-year-old Christopher is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, February 29, on charges of three counts of indecent dealing with children and individuals aged 16 to 18.

Initial police investigations did not uncover evidence against Archbishop Sanders; however, the Church successfully proved his crimes in 2022 with the special authorities granted by Pope Francis. The Church’s confidential findings were handed over to police, after which police resumed their investigation.

Available documents indicate that Sanders’ crimes occurred between 2008 and 2014. He served as the Bishop of Broome, one of the vast coastal regions in northwestern Australia, for over 20 years. In 2020, when allegations of sexual abuse were first published in local media, he stepped down from his episcopal position but retained the honorary title of Archbishop Emeritus.

It should be noted that in 2019, “George Pell,” Australia’s cardinal and Vatican official, was imprisoned on charges of sexual abuse, but his conviction was overturned a year later. The sexual abuse matter involving Archbishop Sanders demonstrates this is not the first time a senior Church official in Australia has been charged with sexual crimes.
