Canada Demands Iran Explain Refusal to Hand Over Black Boxes from Ukrainian Plane

Canada’s Transportation Minister says his country is demanding Iran explain why it has still not handed over the black boxes from the Ukrainian aircraft.

According to Canadian Press news agency, Marc Garneau said Wednesday morning, June 10, in remarks delivered via video link to the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organization council, that despite 92 days having passed since Iran agreed to hand over flight data and recorded cockpit communications, the country has yet to fully comply with this matter.

UIA Flight 752, an international Ukraine International Airlines flight that departed Tehran on January 8, 2020, with 176 passengers bound for Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, crashed minutes after takeoff as a result of a missile attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps near the city of Parand in Tehran Province, killing all passengers on board, most of whom were of Iranian descent. The tragedy occurred hours after the Revolutionary Guard’s missile attack on the Ain al-Asad base in Iraq, which hosts American forces.

Iranian officials initially denied targeting this aircraft; however, later following reports from Western intelligence agencies, they announced that the aircraft was mistakenly hit with a missile. Many of the aircraft’s passengers held Canadian citizenship.
