Canada Emphasizes Implementation of Justice in Ukrainian Plane Downing Case

Melanie Joly, Canada’s Foreign Minister, announced that her country is committed to implementing “justice” and “accountability” for Iran in the case of the downing of the Ukrainian passenger aircraft.
Joly wrote in a tweet that during a meeting with the families of victims of the Ukrainian passenger plane that was shot down by missiles fired by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), she said Canada is committed to “transparency, accountability and justice” in this matter.
The statements and condolences of this senior Canadian government official with the families of Flight 752 victims coincide with the trial of the defendants in this case being held in Tehran.
Concurrently with the announcement of the trial of 10 defendants charged in the case of the IRGC missile strike on the Ukrainian aircraft, a number of families of victims of this flight gathered on Sunday, November 30, in front of Tehran’s military court and chanted slogans such as “Death to Khamenei” and “Death to the Islamic Republic.”
Hamed Esmaeilion, who lost his wife and daughter in this flight, wrote on Twitter about this: “A shameful show with ten low-ranking officers as defendants. The defendants’ bench will await the principal culprits. Ali Khamenei, IRGC commanders and members of the Supreme National Security Council. It will not be long.”
Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 crashed at dawn on January 8, 2020, shortly after takeoff from Tehran International Airport, when struck by two air defense missiles fired by the IRGC, killing all 176 people on board.
After several days of concealment and contradictory and false statements, the Islamic Republic finally admitted that the IRGC air defense had fired on the passenger aircraft, but claimed the reason for the strike was “human error.” Ukraine, Canada and some observers say they do not accept this claim and that the Iranian government is covering up the true reasons for this incident.
