Christian Convert Ibrahim Firoozi Released from Rajaei Shahr Prison After Serving Sentence

Ibrahim Firoozi, a Christian convert, was released from Rajaei Shahr Prison in Karaj today upon completion of his sentence. Mr. Firoozi was sentenced to five years imprisonment by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court in April 2015. Following his release, a ruling requiring two years of exile to Sarbaaz city in Sistan and Baluchestan Province will be implemented.

According to Hrana news agency, citing Mohebat News, today, Saturday, October 25, 2019, Ibrahim Firoozi, a Christian convert prisoner, was released from Rajaei Shahr Prison in Karaj upon completion of his sentence.

Mr. Firoozi had another ruling for two years of exile to Sarbaaz city in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, which will be implemented following his release.

According to the report, Ibrahim Firoozi’s family is seeking a few days of furlough before the exile sentence is implemented, although the outcome of this request remains unclear. Based on this report, prison guards transported him from prison to Karaj this morning and dropped him off on the street. Due to prison conditions, his physical health has been reported as poor.

During his imprisonment, he was deprived of access to medical services and furloughs. Prison officials also refused to grant him furlough following his mother’s death in December 2018.

Ibrahim Firoozi, a 35-year-old lathe operator resident of Robat Karim, has been arrested and tried three times to date on charges of converting to Christianity and holding religious gatherings. He was first arrested in December 2009 due to Christian proselytizing activities following two summons from security agencies, and transferred to Rajaei Shahr Prison in Karaj. He was sentenced by Karaj’s Revolutionary Court to five months imprisonment and five months suspended sentence in that case.

Mr. Firoozi was arrested for the second time on March 9, 2013, and sent to Evin Prison. Robat Karim’s Revolutionary Court sentenced him to one year imprisonment on charges of “propaganda against the system” through holding religious classes and two years exile to Sarbaaz city in Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

He was arrested for the third time on September 16, 2013, and transferred to Rajaei Shahr Prison. In April 2015, Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court, headed by Judge Moghisseh, sentenced Ibrahim Firoozi to five years imprisonment on charges of “forming a group with intent to disturb national security” under Article 498 of the Penal Code. This sentence was ultimately upheld by the appellate court session held on January 15, 2017.
